Fentons Creamery

Fentons Creamery

They’ve been doing construction on the apartment next door for over a month now. It’s my day off. It’s raining, and it’s freezing- better get some ice cream.

Apparently the same people who run the Birthright Israel trips also run day excursions in and around the bay area. You don’t need to be Jewish to attend, so much as you need to appear Jewish. With a name like mine, if the Nazis ever rise to power again, I’m sure to be first in line to take a shower. So I have no qualms about tagging along for free ice cream. Thanks again guys! On to the ice cream…

Fentons Creamery

Fentons is kind of an Oakland landmark. Especially now that they were featured so prominently in the movie “Up.” Were they ever in anything else?

The place is definitely popular. Especially for birthdays- 3 tables were singing happy birthday within the first 45 minutes! It was busy, but the staff was well on top of things. We were a huge 20-person table, and I think we got everything in less than a half hour, seating to delivery.

I got this month’s special: A mountain of cinnamon and chocolate (I subbed coffee) ice cream, with hot caramel, hot fudge, whipped cream, mini churros, and a cherry. It looked incredible! Like most sundaes they do, it arrived dripping to a plate below, unable to be contained by the huge glass it was in. And, this thing was HUGE- easily a pint of ice cream alone.

Unfortunately, tastes weren’t as amazing as looks. The ice cream flavors were pretty weak, and even a little cheap. The cinnamon tasted like bulk Sysco spices. Pretty bland. They also advertise homemade caramel on the menu, but they aren’t fooling anybody. The whipped cream was fake too. Mini churros were nothing special, but I don’t expect world-changing churros from an ice cream parlor, on special… you can’t complain too much about that.

Still, for $9 (I paid $0) this was a huge bowl of ice cream. And, like the fatty that I am, I ate the whole damn thing. Would I go back if asked- hell yes. I just wouldn’t mind sacrificing some quantity for a little more quality. Completely edible nevertheless. Hag Sameah!

The portions were quite gi-normous but I was still able to power through half of it. I’ve definitely had better ice cream (see Bi-rite, or the entire country of Italy) but in my book it was still pretty on-point.
